Well, last time we closed by saying, if God was going to save man from eternal damnation, He had to find a way to make man justified once and forever. I guess we should start by making clear just what justified means. Of course for God to justify, He would need to have a legal reason to do so. For man to be justified means, in this case, to be released from the penalty of his sin and made righteous in the eyes of God.
I am sure you noticed I said once and forever. Just make a mental note of that phase. Remember when we were talking about the law and we said that the Commandments were not only a list of things God wanted man to do or not do, but was also a list that showed man what he seemed incapable of doing.
We have also said that there is always a price to pay. This is true in our daily lives, like what we put in out bodies, drinks, and not just alcohol, smoke, drugs, excessive and/or types of food. At our work place, if we fail to get along with other employees, if we fail to perform our duties, there is a price to pay. So it is with God's Law.
What was apparent to God was, man was incapable of paying the price for his sin. Meaning man had no way to eradicate the penalty for what he has or will do. If the penalty is death, meaning damnation and man himself had no way of altering this, then what.
Well, let's just compare all this to some simple situations. Suppose you had not watched where you were walking and suddenly fell into a deep pit and had no way of extricating yourself. You might think about how dumb or careless you had been, you might regret having fell into the pit. Nonetheless, you're helpless. What you need is someone to intercede. Someone who cares that you're in there and someone who is willing and has the means to remove you.
Suppose you disregard one of man's laws. Suddenly you find yourself before the judge, who to your dismay says, you must pay a fine of five hundred dollars or serve thirty days in jail. Now you regret having done what you did. Your problem is you have no way of paying the fine. You turn and your eyes scan the court. You see some friends, some family. None of them can pay the fine, none can help. The bailiff steps up and takes your arm. Having been found guilty you're about to be led away .
What if, to your wonder and surprise, someone suddenly stepped forward. Someone both compassionate and merciful. Someone who heard your words of regret to the judge. Someone who had seen the hopelessness in your eyes as you had turned and plead for someone to help. What if you heard this benevolent person suddenly say. Release him, I will pay the fine for him. Suddenly you're freed. Free from personally having to pay the price. You look at your benefactor and say. Sir I have no way of repaying you. He smiles and simply says. Go and return to this place no more.
I hope these little illustrations will help you to understand the simplicity of what man often seems to make so complex. That God saw what man needed was an intercessor. Someone with the means and authority to intervene on behalf of man. Someone who was willing to pay the price to free man from the penalty of his own actions.
Well the push has come to the shove. God seeing man needed an intercessor had to select someone who was willing, had the ability and authority and last but not least stood righteous in the eyes of God.
God of course already knew the answer. All of creation, that which is in the heavens and upon the earth, all things come from Him, our Creator. God was before the beginning, He is now and He shall always be. God alone was by nature righteous, justified, trustworthy, truthful. If any creature had similar qualities, they came not from within, but from the goodness of God. God alone had the authority and ability. The answer then was simple. God Himself must be the one, He must pay the price for man or leave man to suffer the consequences for his own actions.
We spent much time in previous talks discussing God's authority and the Trinity. Now it is time to understand that we must settle things in our hearts once and for all. Once we agreed God is the Creator, once we agreed The Scriptures were the unerring word of God, once we agreed the Trinity was accurate, we do not look back. We have reached this point by a steady advancement and like all things if we wish to advance, we must build on what we know and not what we're not sure of. If at this moment you have a doubt, reread that part of our studies dealing with the things your not sure of.
